We’re rocking this at our church tomorrow morning!

Christian Version of Rebecca Black?

I was listening to the radio this evening and heard a new song called “Hold Me” by a new artist Jamie Grace featuring TobyMac. Jamie is now a Gotee Recording artist and is only 19 years old. You can read more about Jamie by Clicking Here.

I’ve struggled for a long time with where Christian music is going lyrically. And I would fall pretty heavily towards hymn lyrics over the contemporary lyrics of today’s songs. The lyrics written in hymns have so much more meaning to them, and as I’m working my way through the Bible and reading some of the Psalms, I see where these people were writing these songs from. Places where they were really both physically hurting and spiritually hurting. And David was a man who was constantly pouring out his heart to the Lord.

Not that I know every hymn, but I’m very certain the phrase “Just when I feel this crazy world is gonna bring me down
That’s when Your smile comes around” would never be part of one.

I’m not saying she isn’t a good musician/singer, just questioning her lyrics and I completely understand how she’s on the radio with TobyMac backing her and being a part of the song, but I surely hope this isn’t where Christian music is going to continue to go.

Is Christianity all about God holding us? Are we God’s teddy bear? Is all we need is for God to smile at us?

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Here is the video:

Here are the lyrics:
(I love, I love, I love, I love the way you hold me)
I’ve had a long day I just wanna relax
Don’t have time for my friends, no time to chit-chat
Problems at my job, wonderin’ what to do
I know I should be working but I’m thinking of You and
Just when I feel this crazy world is gonna bring me down
That’s when Your smile comes around
Oo, I love the way You hold me, by my side You’ll always be
You take each and everyday, make it special in some way
I love the way you hold me, in Your arms I’ll always be
You take each and everyday, make it special in some way
I love You more than the words in my brain can express
I can’t imagine even loving You less
Lord, I love the way You hold me
Whoa whoa
Oh whoa, I love the way You hold me
Whoa whoa
Well Ya, took my day and You flipped it around
Calmed the title wave and put my feet on the ground
Forever in my heart, always on my mind
It’s crazy how I think about You all of the time
And just when I think I’m bout to figure You out
You make me wanna sing and shout
Oo, I love the way You hold me, by my side You’ll always be
You take each and everyday, make it special in some way
I love the way You hold me, in Your arms i’ll always be
You take each and everyday, make it special in some way
I love You more than the words in my brain can express
I can’t imagine even loving You less
Lord, I love the way You hold me
Whoa whoa
Oh whoa, I love the way You hold me
Whoa whoa
I’m so grateful and thankful for all You’ve done
Wish I could tell You in a short story or poem
But, all I have is my voice and this guitar
And You have my heart
Oo, I love the way You hold me, by my side You’ll always be
You take each and everyday, make it special in some way
Oh, I love the way You hold me, in Your arms i’ll always be
You take each and everyday…
Oo, I love the way You hold me, by my side You’ll always be
You make each and everyday, oh so special
Oh, I love the way You hold me, in Your arms I’ll always be
You take each and everyday, make it special in some way
I love You more than the words in my brain can express
I can’t imagine even loving You less
Lord, I love the way You hold me
Whoa whoa
Oh whoa, I love the way You hold me
Whoa whoa
Oh, I love
(I love, I love, I love, I love the way You hold me)

Music Review: Heaven & Earth.

This week’s album is by Phil Wickham.

He came first onto the CCM (Christian Contemporary Music) scene about a year ago, and at first I really did not listen to any of his music, but recently I’ve had a change in my music tastes, and I’m actually starting to listen to a good bit of CCM music, the same kind of music I used to make fun of…

Now I would agree that some of the songs written today, in no way have as much “deepness” as some of the old school hymns, but just recently I have been really enjoying some of the words that current CCM artists are using.

One of them is Phil Wickham. And I’m going to focus on his first single from his album, Heaven & Earth, called “Safe.”

Too often, I feel like I try to do things on my own strength and on my own timing.

Today, Susan and I bought a house. Which is really exciting and fun and right now in the middle of moving, which is really great!

On our way to our new house, I was in the car by myself and realized that there is no way that I could have ever purchased this house by myself. Before I met Susan, I was H.O.R.R.I.B.L.E. with money. I would buy everything I wanted and got myself in to more credit card debt than I would ever want to tell you.

Since meeting Susan, she has taught me tons about money and how to save and this week I’m actually going to be able to pay off one of my credit cards!!!!!! Which may be a little more exciting than the house…just because it’s been such a load on my shoulders for so long. And I realized there was no way that I could have bought the house, or got our of credit card debt by myself.

I hope these lyrics hit you in the same way they did me.

“To the one who’s dreams are falling all apart
And all you’re left with is a tired and broken heart
I can tell by your eyes you think your on your own
but you’re not all alone

Have you heard of the One who can calm the raging seas
Give sight to the blind, pull the lame up to their feet
With a love so strong and never let you go
oh you’re not alone

You will be safe in His arms
You will be safe in His arms
‘Cause the hands that hold the world are holding your heart
This is the promise He made
He will be with You always
When everything is falling apart
You will be safe in His arms

Did you know that the voice that brings the dead to life
Is the very same voice that calls you to rise
So hear Him now He’s calling you home
You will never be alone

These are the hands that built the mountains
the hands that calm the seas
These are the arms that hold the heavens
they are holding you and me

These are hands that healed the leper
Pulled the lame up to their feet
These are the arms that were nailed to a cross
to break our chains and set us free.”

When we feel like we are all alone and we have to do everything by ourselves, we need to be reminded that the same God who nailed his Son to the cross, is the same God who walks with us daily.
